Young Miguel and his mother made it across the Rio Grande like so many others but with their own unique experience.

He saw people crossing, swimming, or using their own flotation devices. Miguel told of a mix of emotions when he stood at the riverbank, one was fear so overpowering that he felt a choking sensation. He imagined crocodiles in the river. There was no time to think, he had to enter the river. Others told him to leave behind the things he was carrying. “They would do no good and only make crossing harder,” they said. It was indelibly one of the hardest moments in the long walk with his mother. He would have to toss aside his backpack, with its drawings of little cars, that had been a gift from his grandmother to see him through the trip. It was too significant a memento to discard in a lonely, unnamed place somewhere along the Mexican riverside. It was a precious gift from his grandmother, and he had to let it go. The emotions hurt. Maybe, Miguel thought to assuage himself, some other boy would find it and cross into America with it.
